Date: Thursday, May 15, 2025
Location: Winnipeg
Substance Sold As: Down
Visual Description: Beige chunk/pebble
Beige chunk/pebble sold as DOWN was found to contain carfentanil (<1%), bromazolam (<1%) and xylazine (<1%).
Bromazolam and xylazine do not respond to naloxone. When combined with opioids such as carfentanil, they can increase the risk of complex overdose.
Carfentanil is considered to be up to 100 times stronger than fentanyl. It is also difficult to detect using standard testing or strips.
Bromazolam is a high-potency, short-acting benzodiazepine-type sedative.
Xylazine is a veterinary tranquilizer that is not approved for use in humans. It is sometimes known as “tranq.”
This sample was brought to Street Connections on May 2, 2025. Local testing was inconclusive, so it was sent to Health Canada for further testing. Fentanyl analogs such as carfentanil are so powerful that only a tiny amount (less than 1%) can have an extremely strong effect.
