Substance Sold As: Down
Visual Description: Pink chunk/rock

A pink rock/chunk substance sold as Down was found to contain para-fluorofentanyl (a synthetic opioid) and medetomidine (an animal tranquilizer).

Combining opioids and sedatives increases your risk of complex overdose. Sedatives like medetomidine do not respond to naloxone.

A community member believed the substance had been involved in a life-threatening emergency that did not respond well to naloxone.

The substance was tested by Health Canada Drug Analysis and these were the results:



Para-Fluorofentanyl (12.6%)
Medetomidine (3.19%)
Caffeine (69.9%)
Fluoro 4-ANPP (no percentage available).

• Para-fluorofentanyl is a synthetic opioid considered to be similar in potency and effect to fentanyl.
• Medetomidine is a tranquilizer that is only approved for use on animals.
• Caffeine is a stimulant normally found in coffee and is often found in Down. However, stimulants like caffeine DO NOT reverse the sedating and respiratory depression effects of opioids or tranquilizers.
• Fluoro 4-ANPP – A precursor, or intermediate substance, used in the synthesis of para-fluorofentanyl, and considered an impurity.
